Keep Your Home Protected During El Nino

By Cletus Jackson

The El Nino Season is officially heading to California! For the past few years, California was in a drought; yet with the impending storms from El Nino on their way, flash floods and heavy rain could be on the menu for California residents. Some safety inspections of your home are in order so that you can make it through the storms safely.

Just like how skin keeps a lot of harmful substances out of the core of your body, the same goes for the roof of your home. The roof is the existential barrier between your home and the elements. Proper roof inspection should always start out with an initial damage report, which is mostly just a look-over of the whole condition of the roof. This could be done yourself if you are the courageous type, or you could always hire a professional to do it. Old or damaged roof decking needs to be repaired as soon as possible. Any damage to the shingles and under layers - including cupping shingles - should be taken care of for good home maintenance of the "outer skin" of your house.

It can be easy to take water proofing around your home for granted, since it is usually only around wet seasons that it comes to mind. If there are improperly sealed segments around your home, this can lead to dangerous foundation shifts, and leaks in the basement. If leaks are already occurring, the basement should be cleared up and sealed properly so that the large rains are more manageable. Any caulking around doors and windows can become cracked or thinned, so it should be repaired or replaced if needed.

Heavy winds and rain can make leaks that you didn't even know existed come to light. Using a type of visible smoke while the home is sealed up can help you to identify any leaks in the seals around your windows and doors. Any air coming inside means that your home could be susceptible to cold winds. Loose frame structures of windows and doors can be identified by a rattling noise if the window is gently shaken. Also, a simple visual inspection of your windows and doors for any cracks or gaps can help you to get those damages repaired before the winds and rain pick up.

With the rainy season coming fast, it is good to detect any potential problems in your roof and shingles, gaps in home waterproofing, and leaks around your doors and windows before the rains start coming in. A lot of these steps can be done by yourself, but don't hesitate to contact a professional to help you inspect your home and get any necessary repairs done.

Building supply companies are all gearing up for the influx of business coming to California. Check with your local supplier to get your home ready!
