The Different Types Of Uses Of Spray Foam Insulation

By Timothy Patterson

The two main materials which are used for a spray foam are the polyol resin and the isocyanate. These two reacts when mixed together and will enlarge 30 to 60 times the volume of its liquid when being sprayed. One advantage of its expansion is that it is useful for packing a certain material and forms its shape, thus, producing a thermal insulation of high value. So this means that the higher the value of product, the more potent its insulation properties.

One most common material which is used is the polyurethane. Polyurethane cells are consist of low conductivity of gas. Polyurethane now is utilized mostly in some industrial uses and applications such as for cushions and for shoe soles. Airplanes are also making use of this and as well buildings as an insulator. A spray foam insulation can be able to block the kinds of heat transfer. Three types are the radiant, conductive, and the convective heat transfers.

Thermoset plastics will be blocking conductive heat transfers because it contains very loose bonds of its molecules. The spray cells also contain close or open air cell foam. Thermoset foams reflect radiant heat because there are reflective surfaces in the foams cell structure. Sprays also have abilities in air sealing, and its benefit is to block convective heat transfers in both the exterior parts and interior parts.

Building and packaging applications are just two of the most common uses of these. This type of insulating is said to be a specialized type of packing since it is widely used for packaging important, fragile valuable items. These valuables would include sculptures, vases, chandeliers, computers, furniture, and other fragile items. Because of its 60 times expansion, it may protect other items that are of any weight, size, and form.

For buildings, they are being used as an alternative for fiberglass, a traditional way of insulating a building. With the mixture of the two components which are the polyol resin and the isocyanate, it is sprayed to concrete slabs, roof tiles, wall cavities, and holes as well. The two types that are used in buildings for providing thermal insulation and also for minimizing air infiltration are polyurethane and the polyisocyanurate.

Polyurethane spray is divided into two. These are medium density close cell and light density open cell. Each division have thermoset cellular plastics which also have small cells in millions.

Light density open cell is frequently referred as the half pound foam. It is a semi firm substance and it has a sponge like structure that enlarges during installation. It also creates open and small cells which are consist of carbon dioxide. Because of the expansion, it may fill voids, cracks, and also crevices. These open cells are mostly applied to interior walls since it gives sound reduction via air leakage blocking.

Medium density close cell or also called as the two pound foam is also a stiff material. It consists of a thermal resistance which is long term. Typically, the color is yellow. In Richardson, TX, some types requires a unique identification color.

In some other countries, spray foams are also used for spraying underneath the roof tiles under a high pressure. A flexible layer will then seal the tiles together These are not only used for severe leaks but also for insulation against enormous heat from the roofs.
